Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Child mortality remains a pressing issue in many developing regions, including Nguru LGA, Yobe State. Public relations (PR) campaigns play a crucial role in addressing this issue by creating awareness, promoting health education, and advocating for policy interventions. PR campaigns leverage various communication tools such as community outreach, social media, and partnerships with health organizations to disseminate information about immunization, nutrition, and hygiene practices. According to recent studies, PR efforts tailored to the specific cultural and socioeconomic contexts of target populations can significantly reduce child mortality rates (Mustapha & Aliyu, 2024). These campaigns foster behavioral changes by engaging local leaders, healthcare providers, and families, thus contributing to improved child health outcomes.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite efforts by government and non-governmental organizations, child mortality rates in Nguru LGA remain high due to inadequate awareness, cultural barriers, and poor access to healthcare services. There is a need to examine the effectiveness of PR campaigns in addressing these challenges, identifying gaps, and providing solutions to enhance their impact on reducing child mortality.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the role of PR campaigns in reducing child mortality in Nguru LGA.
  2. To assess the effectiveness of specific PR strategies in promoting child health awareness.
  3. To identify challenges in implementing PR campaigns aimed at reducing child mortality.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How do PR campaigns contribute to reducing child mortality in Nguru LGA?
  2. What PR strategies are most effective in promoting child health awareness?
  3. What challenges hinder the success of PR campaigns in reducing child mortality?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. H0: PR campaigns have no significant impact on reducing child mortality in Nguru LGA.
  2. H1: PR campaigns tailored to local contexts significantly reduce child mortality rates.
  3. H2: Addressing cultural and logistical barriers enhances the effectiveness of PR campaigns.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study provides critical insights into the role of PR in combating child mortality, offering recommendations for policymakers, health professionals, and communication practitioners. Its findings aim to improve the design and implementation of PR campaigns targeting child health.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on PR campaigns addressing child mortality in Nguru LGA, excluding other health-related issues or geographical areas.
